Drink 0-0, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2019

The 2014 Barbera d'Alba is an intriguing wine in that it speaks more to the personality of the estate than to the year, or even to Barbera. The 2014 is a Cappellano wine, and that's pretty much all there is to it. Succulent, pliant and expressive, the 2014 has a lot to say. On the palate, the 2014 expresses the mid-weight style of the year. Dark chocolate, plum and spice meld into the super-expressive finish. The 2014 was aged in a combination of casks and new tonneau, with the added textural depth from the smaller format oak quite evident. Many years ago, Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.

Cappellano

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
