Vivid purple. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, allspice and potpourri, backed by smoky mineral and licorice notes. Concentrated, expansive blackberry and bitter cherry flavors become spicier and livelier with air, picking up a minerally nuance that adds back-end cut. Sappy and alluringly sweet on the strikingly long, fruit-driven finish, which shows excellent intensity and broad, velvety tannins. This bottling has become more refined in recent years and has been showing much more fruit-forward appeal than it did a decade ago.

I always find the wines from the Les Grandes Places lieu-dit to be masculine and burly, and the 2013 Côte Rôtie les Grandes Places does nothing to change my opinion. Medium plus-bodied, nicely concentration and tannic, it gives up lots of spicy oak, crushed rocks, licorice and smoked meats. Possessing striking purity, good mid-palate depth and a great finish, it needs short term cellaring but will have upwards of two decades of longevity. It’s a high class Côte Rôtie well worth checking out.

Bright purple. Intense aromas of ripe blueberry, cherry compote and candied licorice, with a suggestion of black olive emerging slowly. Supple and broad on the palate, offering sweet dark berry and floral pastille flavors that are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Smooth, sweet and seamless on the clinging, powerful finish, which features intense blue fruit character and youthful tannic grip.

Dark crimson. Old vines and no pebbles here – just schist. Dense and polished. Very youthful and introvert indeed. (JR)
