Punt e Mes is produced by adding more than 40 different botanicals, including quinine and orange peel, to a blend of dry white wine. The name Punt e Mes literally translates as “point and a half”. In the latter part of the 19th century, when the drink was invented, patrons at the Carpano wine shop would request the style of vermouth and bitter to sweet ratio they wanted. In 1870, one man’s request for “punt e mes” – a point and a half of bitterness – struck accord as the local stockbrokers in the bar overheard the request on a day when the Turin stock market had fallen by one and a half points. The name, and the recipe, became local legend. We estimate this bottle of Punt e Mes is from the late 1970s or early 1980s.
