Magnum. Engrossingly complex nose that is recognisable yet original; as well as earth, cedar and graphite, there is something more animal and intestinal, giving a gamey edge that is thrilling to taste. Still firmly tannic, although there's a certain crumbliness to the texture that makes it entirely drinkable. Long fruit persistence. Contemplative yet hedonistic. Savoury yet ripe. (RH)

The 2004 Masseto, one of my personal favorites, is positively stellar. I have always adored the 2004 for its silky tannins, stunning aromatic presence and total finesse, all of which are on display today. Beautifully pure to the long finish and profoundly beautiful in every way, the 2004 has it all. It was a textbook vintage that only presented one real challenge, and that was moderating the naturally high yields that resulted from an unblocking of energy the vines had held in store from the previous year. Where producers moderated yields, the wines are often stunning, as is very much the case here. If forced to choose only one vintage of Masseto I could own or drink it would be the 2004.
The 2004 isn't huge like the 2001 and 2006, but rather it is a wine that continues to impresses for its pure length, finesse and sheer classiness. On this night, it was truly exceptional.
The 2004 Masseto is all silk and elegance. The 2004 is arguably the most finessed, silky Masseto ever made. Bright floral notes add lift and precision to a core of sweet red berries and spices in this supple, exceptionally polished wine. This is the height of elegance and polish with Masseto.
About the producer
Established in the 1980s by Lodovico Antinori on the advice of André Tchelistcheff, Masseto was one of Tuscany’s first pure Merlot wines. Sibling to Ornellaia, the Super Tuscan is often considered the Pétrus of Italy – offering powerful, perfumed wines that are highly sought-after by collectors.
