Dark ruby. Sumptuously complex leaf mould nose with wonderful freshness. Tannins well in retreat; it's all complex tertiary stuff now – until lighty sandy dry finish. Super appetising. Feels like health juice. (JR)

Seems more complex and advanced aromatically than the 2005. Then dense and dark and mulchy. Very dry. Firmer and more assertive than the 2005 Colonnello. Pretty glamorous! (JR)

5,000 bottles produced. The soil of the Colonnello vineyard consists of calcareous clay with a high sand and fossil content, called Marne di Sant'Agata. It is supposed to give floral aromas and more approachable tannins. Similar vinification to the straight Barolo, while the wine stays 28 months in large oak. Deep ruby with small orange-tinged rim. Very youthful, almost fruit driven, perfumed, and spicy. Fragrant if shy, and with a lovely gentle mouthfeel. Grainy tannins and very well-integrated acidity. Closed but at the same time showing a complex, fragrant finish. (WS)

Monforte d'Alba. Medium-deep ruby with broad rim with just the beginning of orange tinges. Ripe, rustic opulent, and so is the palate with bags of sweet fruit but slightly one dimensional at this stage, due to the oak, it seems. Not without merits though, with an intriguing lingering finish and ongoing tannin. (WS)
