The largely unknown lost distillery Shirakawa is responsible for producing the world’s rarest and oldest single-vintage Japanese whisky.

In 2022, Shirakawa owners Takara Shuzo – who are better known for, but still the silent company behind, Highland distillery Tomatin – stunned the whisky world when it unveiled Shirakawa 1958. At the time, this was the only official single malt bottling from Shirakawa and the earliest single-vintage Japanese whisky ever released.
