Owned by the same family as Ch. Ausone, Ch. de Fonbel is one of the best-value Saint-Emilion estates. It has a long history stretching back to the Roman era, however its story really begins when Alain Vauthier purchased the property in 1971.
Classified as a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, the estate consists of 16 hectares, split between 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Carménère (one of the largest percentages of the grape found in Bordeaux). The vines are on average 25 years old.
