Revealing more orange rind, lemon zest, honeyed grapefruit, and restrained minerals in a full-bodied, closer to the vest-style is the 2005 Chardonnay Sea Smoke. Enjoy this beauty over the next decade.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation A rare bottling of their own Chardonnay, as Sea Smoke?s cult-like Pinot Noir fruit has almost completely obscured its white partner from Burgundy. An unabashed, frank representation of the varietal, sporting ripe fig, toffee, honeyed pear, anise and a layer of sweet toast that may bother some Chardonnay purists. Thick and a touch jellied in the mouth, but w/ ample acidic definition that keeps the pulse of its intense flavors in check along to the finish. Not nearly as fascinating or complex as Brewer Clifton?s Sea Smoke masterpieces, but sure to win over a lot of fans for its sheer self-indulgence

About This Producer

For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard.

Sea Smoke produces Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of their estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across the hillsides, slowing the ripening process and providing the extended maturation period essential to the development of top-quality Pinot Noir.
