Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90(+?)?

($45) Bright ruby-red. Musky black raspberry, chocolate, mocha and truffle on the nose. Sweet on entry, then a bit youthfully clenched in the middle, with a slightly edgy quality to the flavors of black raspberry, pepper, herbs and spices. Not as pliant or creamy at this early stage as the 2006 was a year ago. This structured, firmly tannic wine finishes with a light saline nuance.

Lots of savory notes, olive, sage, underbrush with the fruit in the backround. Hold for integration.

About This Producer

Rudius is the ancient Roman word for a wooden sword that was used by soldiers and gladiators during their training. Traditionally, a rudius was given to gladiators when they had won their freedom from the arena. Winemaker Jeff Ames views his own project as freedom to pursue his style of winemaking, after working on other labels over the past years. Ames focuses on Grenache and Syrah from Russian River. Production is under 200 cases each.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
