($60) Good medium ruby. Superripe aromas of roasted raspberry, blueberry and smoked meat. Juicy but youthfully subdued in the mouth, with flavors of dark raspberry, smoked meat, chocolate and celery seed. I don't find a lot of lift today, but the firmly tannic finish displays good grip.

Unbelievable - although I think this may be going back to sleep right now. I believe it was more open and approachable last time (6 months ago)... Had with a simple grilled chicken dinner along with veggies. Dark and brooding fruit - cherries with toasted apple pie. Rich mouth but jut a bit more dry than I remember last time. The supple leather is being replaced with a bit more dry characteristics - which works for this wine. I think it would have opened more if I'd have been a bit more patient and given it an extra hour...but I couldn't. It's that good!

About This Producer

Riding the crest of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,100 feet, Pride Mountain Vineyards' 200+ acre property is bisected by the Napa/Sonoma county line. The family owned winery has been making some of Spring Mountain's best wines since 1990. Winemaker Bob Foley employs the laborious technique of picking, vinifying, and barrel-aging each of 80 vineyard blocks separately, resulting in the most ideal ripeness levels and blend quality. This integration of vineyard practices and winemaking art is done purposefully. The goal is wines that are bold and fruitful, and that speak of their mountain lineage. Considered by Robert Parker to belong in "the top echelon of California's quality wineries," wines from Pride's gravelly mountaintop vineyards are consistently highly rated and are a staple component of any classic Napa collector's cellar.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
