Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 96+

Almost as impressive is the 2005 Cabernet Reserve, a blend of 95.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4.5 % Petit Verdot, in this case sourced 58% from Sonoma County and 42% from Napa. Its 14.5% alcohol is slightly lower than its sibling's. This full-bodied wine is very concentrated, with a saturated bluish/purple color and a classic nose of mocha and espresso intermixed with creme de cassis and charcoal. The finish is a good 40-45 seconds, and the wine has a remarkable vibrancy and freshness from the vintage's acidity. This is terrific stuff to drink now and over the next 12-15 years.

Rich and complex, brimming with dense, opulent yet elegant layers of mocha, black cherry, blackberry and wild berry fruit that's pure, focused, deep and persistent, ending with mouthcoating flavors and ripe, fleshy tannins.

($85; includes 4% petit verdot) Good full medium ruby. Crushed black fruits, licorice, sandalwood, tobacco and cocoa powder on the nose. Sweet and silky but juicy, with dark fruit and exotic spice flavors offering lovely inner-mouth aromatic character. This has a distinctly briary mountain berry aspect. The longest of these offerings, with ripe acidity and rather powerful tannins giving it a big structure.

About This Producer

Riding the crest of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,100 feet, Pride Mountain Vineyards' 200+ acre property is bisected by the Napa/Sonoma county line. The family owned winery has been making some of Spring Mountain's best wines since 1990. Winemaker Bob Foley employs the laborious technique of picking, vinifying, and barrel-aging each of 80 vineyard blocks separately, resulting in the most ideal ripeness levels and blend quality. This integration of vineyard practices and winemaking art is done purposefully. The goal is wines that are bold and fruitful, and that speak of their mountain lineage. Considered by Robert Parker to belong in "the top echelon of California's quality wineries," wines from Pride's gravelly mountaintop vineyards are consistently highly rated and are a staple component of any classic Napa collector's cellar.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
