Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 90

The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Syrah Napa is a darker, denser effort displaying notes of blackberries, black currants, cherries, spice and earth along with broad, rich, medium to full-bodied flavors, lovely richness, a seamless integration of acidity, tannin and alcohol, and a bold, dramatic mouthfeel and finish. La Sirena's Heidi Barrett has turned out a wonderful 'grogâ? made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Grenache and Petite Sirah.

About This Producer

Heidi Barrett reached legendary status when she was making Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle in the 1900s. She has since gone on to consult for several other small estates in the Valley, including Barbour, Paradigm and Revana. La Sirena is her personal project, started in 1994 and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Muscat among its offerings. Future plans for La Sirena include developing Estate vineyards in the Eastern Canyons of Calistoga.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
