A new offering from Steve Kistler is the 2005 Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard, a Sonoma Coast site located close to the Durell Vineyard. This classic 2005 displays a solid core of intense, concentrated fruit, medium to full body, and high acid, which provides superb freshness and buttresses the wine's super intensity and richness. It possesses abundant mineral, white citrus, and orange blossom characteristics as well as beautiful purity. Kistler Vineyards, undeniably one of the world's finest winemaking estates, is run with passionate dedication to detail and quality by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. It is wines like these that keep an old critic like me inspired and energized.

($65) Yellow-gold. Strikingly complex aromas of poached pear, toasted grain, iodine and mineral salts, with a suave floral undertone. Palate-staining citrus and stone fruit flavors offer an uncanny blend of finesse and power, with a expression of smoky minerality that reminded me of a Montrachet from Marc Colin. Refuses to let go of the palate, finally finishing with strong iodine, toasty lees and pear skin qualities. A really extraordinary new wine from Kistler, from eight-year-old vines in the Parmalee-Hill Vineyard, planted on rocky soil in southwest Sonoma, near the Carneros line.

A great Kistler. First time trying the Stone Flat and loved it. A bit more restrained than many others. Not sure if this is the vintage or the vineyard as I haven't tried any of their other 05's yet. Ripe tropical nose with great focus and acidity. Will certainly last but not sure why I'd wait to drink the rest.

Great performance from a relatively young vineyard. Bright and luscious fruit, with just a bit of butter.

About This Producer

Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery located in the Russian River Valley specializing in Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since its first vintage in 1979, the winery has grown in size to produce 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler share the winemaking responsibilities, while Mark also acts as chemist and business manager. The winery, completed in 1992, is located on their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Kistler's fruit is sourced from various vineyards across Napa and Sonoma counties. Kistler Vineyards' wines are released semi-annually and almost exclusively to its mailing list.

Wine Varietal: Chardonnay

Arguably the best dry white wine grape out there, Chardonnay is grown all over the globe. In addition to being the backbone of fine white Burgundies, Chardonnay is also one of the three major grape varieties used in producing Champagne. Susceptible to a myriad of complications, Chardonnay berries are relatively small, thin-skinned, fragile, and oxidize easily. Chardonnay grapes can be sensitive to winemaking techniques and more difficult to handle from harvest to bottling than many other varieties. Some producers will use malolactic fermentation (where harsher malic acid is turned into softer lactic acid and carbon dioxide) to reduce crispness and acidity and add a creamy, buttery texture to wines. The "oaky" character of some Chardonnays comes from fermenting or aging which takes place in oak barrels. Once barrel-aged, Chardonnay may take on notes of vanilla or toast. While Chardonnay is produced worldwide, the best can be found in France, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Chardonnay include mineral, green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, butter and smokiness.
