($55) Good deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant syrup, menthol and nutty oak on the nose. Rich, creamy and very ripe, with high-toned black fruit flavors nicely framed by sound acidity. Quite substantial for this bottling. Finishes with building tannins and a sizable structure. This has turned out well.

Cabernet Sauvignon at Phelps is represented by the opulent 2004 Napa, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot. A sexy style of Cabernet, dark ruby/purple-colored, with notes of subtle herbs intermixed with black currant, cedar, and spice, this medium to full-bodied wine should be drunk over the next 7-8 years.

An elegant style, with ripe, vibrant currant and black cherry fruit that's well-defined, keeping the focus on the fruit while adding a cedary oak overlay.

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot. Very pure, virtually saintly clarity to the blackcurrant flavour, and choc-mint secondary characters too. Dry, absolutely focused ripe and juicy fruit. Natural flavours, organic tasting, if there is such a thing. Immensely lengthy too, and only just hinting at the development to come, despite being very approachable now. (RH)

About This Producer

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
