Sleek, sensuous and focused, offering smoky green olive and black olive accents to the blackberry and tar flavors. The crunchy tannins provide grip on the open-weave finish.

Showing consistently from barrel and bottle, the thrilling 2010 Syrah En Cerise offers up a perfumed, wild array of ripe, meaty black cherries, soy, black olive, smoked herbs and river rock as well as a full-bodied, voluptuous and awesomely textured palate that carries its core of deep, concentrated fruit beautifully. Showing the classic Cayuse funk, as well as a complex, layered profile, it will benefit from short-term cellaring and evolve for 15 years or more. Drink 2015-2025.

Good deep ruby-red. Multidimensional aromas of blueberry, lavender, charcoal, charred meat and brown spices. Less voluminous and airy than the Cailloux bottling but with compelling sweetness and intensity to the blueberry, spice and game flavors. This wonderfully precise, impeccably balanced wine comes across as tighter and less evolved than the Cailloux. It will be a treat to compare these two bottlings in five years.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
