Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

(vinified by Heidi Barrett) Full ruby-red. Cool aromas of cassis, black cherry, blackberry, tobacco leaf, smoky oak and black pepper. Silky in the mouth but nicely delineated, with a rather strong oak element accentuating the wine's almost roasted sweetness. Has good density and finesse. Finishes with full, slightly drying tannins.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 88

This lean, austere, Bordeaux-like effort possesses a saturated ruby/purple color as well as complex aromatics of cassis, plums, cedar, dried herbs, and licorice. Once past a sweet attack, it takes on a compressed, narrow mouthfeel. Nevertheless, it is an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink well for 10-15 years.

About This Producer

After decades of managing and consulting for the most exclusive wineries in Napa, Jim Barbour began cultivating grapes for his own wine in 1992. In a gravel and loam-soil vineyard just south of St. Helena, he grafted budwood from famed Grace Family Vineyards, and was on his way to producing high caliber Cabernet Sauvignon. With Heidi Peterson Barrett as winemaker, the team has focuses on high quality in the vineyards and cellar. Barbour harvests only one-to-two tons per acre and strives to maintain a well-balanced vine with little to no irrigation during the year. Since their first vintage of 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon, production has steadily increased, but remains well below 1,000 cases.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
