Rather shy nut skin aroma. Powerful and penetrating, but the nut skin flavor is dryer than the 10-year-old. More concentrated but doesn't really come alive in the mouth. Best today on the strong finish. I've had better luck with this bottling in the past.

For The Love of Port | Rating: 90

More orange to the center but with a touch of light ruby and a bit more bricking than the 10 year old. Fuller bodied than the 10 year old and a lot smoother and possessing a more rounded texture. Actually, the texture of this wine is one of its significant strengths and is complemented by the sweet hazelnut and caramelized sugar flavors. But I keep digging that graceful mouthfeel, which is velvety and sensuous. The aftertaste is refreshing and lingers long after swallowing.

I'm normally a fan of Vintage and LBV ports but thought I'd try this Tawny. I pick up fig notes especially compared to a LBV port. Has a slightly golden hue and an assertive sweetness. All in all, not my preference in a port but certainly decent.

About This Producer

The 300-year-old estate, home to some of world's finest Port, is located high up in the Duoro region of Oporto, Portugal. Relatives of the estate's original owners still control the vineyards today. Referred to as the "Latour of Port," Taylor's has been known for centuries as the premier shipper of superior Vintage Ports, Tawny Ports, and its signature Late Bottled Vintage Ports. Both the '92 and '94 vintages received 100 points from Wine Spectator, while the '94 also came in as the top wine of its year.

Wine Varietal: Port Blend

Port is a fortified wine produced in the Douro region of Portugal. To achieve a sweet, high alcohol final product, brandy is added to the fermenting juice, stopping fermentation while sugar is still present in the must. Although more than 80 different grape varieties are authorized in blending, only five make up the majority of Port produced, each adding a unique profile to the finished blend. "Port-style" wines are created the world over using a bevy of traditional and non-traditional varieties.

Touriga Nacional produces small, dark-skinned grapes with high tannins. These grapes give Port grip, body, and structure.

Touriga Francesca is thinner skinned, lighter in tannins than Touriga Nacional, and contributes fruit, aroma, suppleness and roundness.

Tinta Roriz (Portuguese name for Tempranillo) adds high sugar content, low acidity, color and fruit.

Tinta Barroca is known for producing wines of delicacy and finesse, with smooth velvety fruit. It brings sweetness and ripeness to the final blend.

Tinto Cao produces fine and complex wines. Unfortunately, its painfully small yields have reduced plantings to almost insignificant levels.
