Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating:

(100% merlot; 32 h/H; IPT 77; g/l total acidity; ph 3.8;13.5% alcohol): Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of blackberry, flowers and chocolatey torrefaction. Bright and fresh in the mouth, with sweet black cherry and violet flavors that carry through nicely on the persistent back end. Finishes with slightly tight tannins that will need time to resolve. Although I love this wine's purity, I found this version of Le Pin to be noticeably less intense than the best recent vintages. Perhaps the elevage will help flesh it out a bit.

This is the essence of Le Pin with incredible silk texture and beautiful fruit. A berry, sweet-tobacco, chocolate and dusty undertone. It reminds me of many wonderful and underrated Le Pins of the 1980s like 1985 or 1986. What a wine. Better in 2018. But who can wait? Cystal clear. It's like the 2001 that was always better than 2000.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 93-95

The 2012 Le Pin exhibits a surprisingly opaque purple color, moderately high tannin, deep mocha and jammy berry characteristics, unexpected headiness, an alcoholic blast and lots of glycerin and fruit. This beauty should come into its own in 4-5 years, and last for 15 or more.

About This Producer

Chateau Le Pin is owned by the Thienpont family (also proprietors of Vieux Chateau Certan) and has an annual production of about 500 bottles. Le Pin's vineyards are located in the central part of the Pomerol plateau and planted with 90% Merlot grapes and the balance Cabernet Franc. The wines have a ripe, fruit-forward character that typically peak after 15 years of age. Chateau Le Pin takes its name from the presence of a single Pine tree growing on the property.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
