Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 93

Just how terrific the 2011 vintage was on the high elevation of Howell Mountain is evidenced by the 2011 Zinfandel. Made from 100% Zinfandel, this beauty spent 16 months in French oak (34% new). It exhibits the briery, peppery, meaty side of Zinfandel, a dense ruby/plum color, full-bodied richness and loads of fruit and character. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years.

(aged in one-third new oak): Deep red. Aromas of licorice, plum and nutty oak. Sweet, ripe plum fruit is lifted by flowers, pepper and spices. Briary and intensely flavored and not at all green. At this point in my tasting with Thomas Brown at Outpost, he expressed his opinion that the Howell Mountain AVA was very successful in 2011.

Dense and muscular, yet layered and complex, with black currant and toasted herb aromas leading to dried cherry, mineral and white pepper flavors. Needs time.

About This Producer

Howell Mountain provides a true "outpost" for these wines, with rocky soil, cool breeze, and a stunning view. At an altitude of 2,100 feet above the Napa Valley floor, owners Terry and Juli Pringle grow Zinfandel, Cabernet, Petit Sirah, and Grenache, all organically. The debut vintage was the 1998 100% Znfandel, which garnered a 93-point score from The Wine Spectator. Thomas Brown is the full time winemaker, and Ehren Jordan, winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, consults. A second project, True Vineyard, debuts in 2008 with a Bordeaux blend estate wine.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
