Vinous | Rating: 93

A big step up from the villages, the 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru bursts from the glass with an exotic melange of dark red/blackish fruits. Graphite, rose petal, cinnamon and raspberry candy follow, adding notable dimension, complexity and nuance. I very much like the sense of energy and tension here. This is a terrific showing from de Vogue.

Bright medium red, less dark than the village offering. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, crushed stone, mace and cardamom. Tightly wound, juicy and penetrating, with superb youthful energy to the flavors of red cherry, raspberry and mineral flavors. The juicy, rising finish features terrific grip and length, leaving the salivary glands vibrating. Really wonderfully intense for a wine that's barely 12.2% alcohol in bottle (chaptalized from 12%).

Burghound | Rating: 89-91

(Note: all from younger vines Musigny) It is immediately evident that there is more here with its highly complex, cool and ultra-pure red berry fruit, floral, spice and stone hints. There is excellent delineation to the voluminous and attractively textured medium weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the saline-infused finish. There is a real sense of energy on the finish where the supporting tannins are just ripe enough to avoid any sense of asperity or greenness.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
