Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

Rich and powerful, but focused like a laser, with wild berry and toasty briar aromas that lead to ripe but complex flavors of black cherry, licorice and spicy orange peel. The tannins are big but fleshy.

Another pretty wine, the 2011 Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard is a touch more aromatically expressive, nuanced and layered than the Pesenti. Sweet floral notes, herbs and red fruits are all woven together nicely in this attractive, mid-weight Zinfandel.

(16.1% alcohol): Good deep red. High-pitched aromas of crushed cherry, cranberry, raspberry and orange zest; smells high in acidity! Then vibrant and penetrating on the palate, offering a captivating balance between salinity and primary red fruit flavors. A bit youthfully aggressive today owing to its high alcohol, but the wine's rocky limestone lift gives the finish surprising precision.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
