Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Bright red. Intensely perfumed scents of red berries, Asian spices, dried rose and sassafras. Sappy, sharply focused raspberry and cherry flavors are lifted by zesty acidity, picking up a blood orange nuance with air. Pure, lively, long pinot with excellent clarity and surprising power.

About This Producer

Ryan Zepaltas arrived in California from Eau Claire, Wisconsin with $400 and a skateboard so he could indulge his skate passion year-round. A career detour took him to Siduri, where he learned to make Pinot Noir and Syrah under Dianna and Adam Lee. In 2004 he released the first wine under his own label, 40 cases of Syrah sourced from Rosella's Vineyard. His 2005 Pinot Noir La Cruz Vineyard, a site owned by Keller Estates on the Sonoma Coast, received a 95-point rating from The Wine Spectator and put Ryan on the radar for good. Living literally in the Suicci Vineyard, from which he gets Pinot, allows Ryan total control over his production from vine to bottle.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
