Tasting the three most recent vintages of the Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon was not only a privilege, but also an intellectual and hedonistic turn-on. The 2010 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a magnificent wine. Full-bodied and opulent with terrific purity, an intriguing, gravelly, wet stone-like minerality, and a sensational perfume, it has a spectacular finish that lasted over 45 seconds, offering up copious quantities of black currants, black cherries, cedar and vanillin. It is one of the superstars of the vintage. It is accessible now because of the sweetness of the tannins, but make no mistake, there is plenty of structure underlying the luxurious fruit levels. It should drink well for 30+ years.

(14.9% alcohol; from vines picked in October "before and after the rain," according to winemaker Celia Welch): Bright ruby. Deep, brooding, fully ripe aromas of cassis, cocoa powder, licorice, peppery herbs and Rutherford dust. Silky, suave and deep; builds inexorably to saturate the entire palate with dark berry, dark chocolate and mocha flavors. Finishes very long and seriously structured, with noble chocolatey tannins calling for patience. This potentially long-lived wine may well merit an even higher score with a decade or so in the bottle.

Striking for its elegance and refinement, with pure, rich, supple dark berry, fresh loamy earth, dried herb and cedar flavors. Shows length and persistence. A seductive style that needs time.

My first ever Scarecrow. Needs time to fully integrate, but great fruit on the nose and palate, plush mouthfeel, notes of cedar and maybe tobacco. I liked it a lot.

About This Producer

Sourced from the 60-year-old vines off Bret Lopez's JJ Cohn Vineyard in Rutherford, and made by Celia Welch, this wine became a legend in just three short years. The vines were planted in 1945 by JJ Cohn (Lopez's Grandfather) in response to neighbor and Inglenook Manager John Daniel's post-war behest to plant vines to service the coming demand. These original St. George-rooted, non-trellised "old men" continue to produce world-class fruit for world-class wine. Scarecrow is named after the character in The Wizard of Oz, as Cohn was Chief Production Executive at MGM pictures in the 1930s, when the movie was made. Lopez spent his summers as a boy at the vineyard and relishes the memories from that time. He and wife, Mimi Deblasio, reside in the original house at the vineyard.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
