Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

This is jam-packed with dark blackberry, currant and boysenberry fruit, but cuts like a knife, thanks to riveting acidity, a blaze of singed iron and a long, charcoal-studded finish. A lovely lingering note of singed bay leaf adds a mouthwatering echo.

The 2010 Gigondas (60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah) is a beautifully rich effort revealing a dense purple color as well as lots of blueberry, black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with hints of lead pencil shavings, truffles and spring flowers. Full-bodied, opulent and sumptuous, this 2010 should drink well for a decade or more.

Saturated ruby. Raspberry, cherry and smoky Indian spices on the highly fragrant nose and on the palate. Densely packed and lively, offering vibrant red berry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. Gains weight with air and finishes smooth, spicy and long, leaving a floral pastille note behind.

About This Producer

Located in the very heart of Gigondas, this property has been in the family for 500 years, with ancient stone cellars that haven't changes much since they were hewn out of the rock. The wines are made by Louis Barroul, a fanatical and uncompromising individual who extracts from the land the true essence of the grape and is driven to make nothing but top-notch wines. Louis is a hands-on type of winemaker, and even with the grapes he contracts for, he personally oversees the thinning, pruning, ripening and harvesting. This dedication and surveillance pays off in spades in the end with wines that are focused and concentrated without being flabby. They showcase an array of balanced fruit, spice and earth flavors.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
