This is pure Cabernet Sauvignon magic with incredible aromas of currants, blackberries and light spices. Tiny hints of hazelnut. Wet earth. Full body, with super velvety tannins. The purity of fruit is breathtaking. It goes on for minutes. This is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot. Try after 2020.

Initially, there is a tangible strictness and linearity on the nose of this spellbinding Mouton-Rothschild, though it unfolds to reveal blackberry, mulberry, truffle and violets scents. The palate is medium-bodied but the tannins and silky and fine. This has a bewitching texture, seamless and utterly harmonious, the finish feminine and poised with outstanding mineralite. This might be the best wine ever produced under Philippe Dhalluin. Tasted January 2014.

This strides in with distinction, starting off with a showy but integrated layer of espresso-infused toast, followed by plush tiers of crushed currant, plum and blackberry fruit interspersed with cocoa and well-roasted cedar notes. The long, tobacco- and loam-filled finish shows lots of heft, but stays polished. An impressive display of unadulterated, muscular Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep ruby-red. Great soil-driven aromas of cassis, licorice, graphite and loam. Hugely dense, seamless and concentrated, but with ripe, harmonious acidity giving definition to the plush flavors of creme de cassis , bitter chocolate, minerals and loam. Most impressive today on the mounting, palate-staining finish, which is almost painful yet manages to convey a light touch. Endlessly complex and vibrant wine with decades of positive evolution ahead of it. One of my favorites of this outstanding vintage.

Tasted 17 Feb: Very youthful and very Cabernet and pretty spicy. Very correct and with an attractive dryness on the finish. Very snazzy.Tasted 8 Apr: 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot. Burnished dark pruney crimson. Very opulent and heady on the nose. Lovely perfume. Lots of fully ripe black fruits. Amazingly polished – so much so that you are almost distracted from the huge tannic charge. Not quite as dense as some of the greatest 2010s but very well balanced. Hugely Cabernet. As in 2009, great care has been taken not to produce too heavy a wine. There is almost Lafite-like structure here. Very, very polished middle palate. Bone dry, pretty tannic finish. (Score: 18.5 30-45)

About This Producer


Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is a First Growth Bordeaux estate located in the village of Paulliac. The chateau was originally known as Chateau Brane-Mouton while in the possession of the Barons de Brane, but was given its current name by Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. The current owner is Philippine de Rothschild, Nathaniel's great-great granddaughter. Mouton-Rothschild is known for being the first estate to initiate complete chateau-bottling in 1924 and for being the only estate from the 1855 classification to be reclassified (upgraded to First Growth in 1973). Mouton's bottles are unique in that each label is designed by a famous artist of the day. This feature makes Mouton-Rothschild especially attractive to collectors. Not to be confused with the grand vin, Mouton also makes a generic Bordeaux called Mouton Cadet, which is dramatically lower in price and highly distributed. The estate also produces a dry Bordeaux Blanc called Ailes d'Argent.

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, with annual production varying between 20-25,000 cases. The vineyards are comprised of gravel on a subsoil of marl and clay. Mouton is one of the last Medoc estates to ferment its wine in oak vats. Maturation is done in new oak casks. Mouton is a complex wine with an exotic character and powerful tannins. The bouquet features black currants, cedar, pencil lead, licorice, and spice. Younger vintages appear opaque or deep purple, while older vintages tend to show more garnet. Some of the best vintages of Mouton-Rothschild include 1945, 1953, 1982, 1986, 1995, 1989 and 2002.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend


Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
