Broad-shouldered, very ripe and rich, with great intensity and concentration to the baked berry notes, mixing blueberry, wild berry, plum and raspberry. Ends with fresh earth, wilted rose and subtle berry flavors. Drink now through 2020. 1,615 cases made.

Another highlight, the 2010 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard is one of the most vivid, totally alive wines in this lineup. There is a lot going on in the glass, starting with beautifully delineated aromatics, great definition in the fruit and a long, creamy finish. Now that Kosta-Browne investor Bill Price has also purchased Gaps Crown, this site becomes an estate vineyard for the winery. All the elements are in place for the 2010 to develop beautifully in bottle, but I will not be surprised if future vintages are even better. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

Vivid ruby. Heady, expansive bouquet of candied red and dark berries, incense and Asian spices, with a smoky accent coming up with aeration. Sappy, palate-staining black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show impressive depth and energy, picking up floral and cinnamon nuances on the back half. The finish repeats the spicy note and clings with excellent tenacity.

About This Producer

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
