Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 100

The 2010 IX Estate Syrah is one of the most compelling Syrahs ever made in California. It ranks alongside some of the perfect Syrahs from Sine Qua Non in Santa Ynez and the Santa Rita Hills. Tasting like liquified steak au poive with blackberry and blueberry sauce, this amazing wine reveals staggering aromas of flowers, bouquet garni, melted asphalt, licorice, pepper and meaty notes. It should drink well for 15+ years assuming you have that much patience.

Saturated ruby-red. Sexy, inviting aromas of smoked meat, brown spices, blueberry and brown sugar, lifted by a floral perfume and pungent minerality. Initially tight and savory in the middle, with bright acidity keeping the fruit under wraps, but showed increasing suppleness and sweetness as it opened in the glass. As much red fruit as black in style, thanks to the iron element in the rocky soil and the cooler growing season. Finishes broad, smoky and very long, with suave tannins totally buffered by mid-palate stuffing. A beauty.

Hard to imagine a wine with more flavor and moving parts, with explosive fruit jumping from the glass. Rich, layered and exotic, this is loaded with tiers of flavor, offering dark berry, espresso, new leather and cracked pepper, then creamy oak, espresso and dried herb. Sails on and, yes, it's tannic.

About This Producer

Ann Colgin, a former fine art dealer, began her label in 1992, and it quickly became one of the most sought-after names in Napa. Winemaking duties were originally handled by Helen Turley, then Mark Aubert in 1999. Production of the Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard is very small, with only about 350 cases produced each vintage. As with most of the world's truly great wines, Colgin's philosophy revolves around low yields and meticulous care of the fruit in the vineyard, winery and transportation between the two.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
