Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 91-94

The black/purple-colored 2010 Cornas Vieilles Vignes reveals an amazing nose of blackberry jam, cassis, spring flowers, camphor and graphite as well as a touch of smoky meat. Full-bodied, with good acidity and loads of tannin, it needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years and drunk over the following 20-25 years.

Inky ruby. Cassis, cherry compote and cola on the pungent, highly aromatic nose and in the mouth. Lush and expansive, offering palate-staining dark berry and bitter cherry flavors that gain sweetness with air. Supple tannins make a late appearance and meld smoothly into this wine's densely packed dark fruit. Shows surprising vivacity for a wine of such richness.

This has woodsy edges, with tobacco, bay leaf and ganache notes studding the core of mulled plum, fig and blackberry fruit, followed by a lingering juniper note on the finish. A touch old-school, with a chalky feel extending the pure finish.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
