A seemingly weightless, gracious wine, the 2010 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard impresses for its superb balance and pure class. Layers of sweet, floral infused nuances add complexity to the expressive red-toned fruit. Saline notes appear later, giving the finish an attractive tension. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.

(16.1% alcohol; from a crop level around 1.5 tons per acre, according to Jordan): Medium ruby. Aromas of kirsch , blackberry and gunflint. A juicy, extremely primary infant, with urgent, very intense crushed berry flavors dominating. Offers compelling fruit sweetness, and the superb whiplash of a finish, featuring serious but fully ripe tannins, suggests that this will reward cellaring.

That rare Zin that shows both richness and a sleek sense of el- egance. Briary and floral black raspberry aromas lead to delicately complex flavors of smoky cherry, wild anise and white peppercorn.

I had tasted this at the Turley winery, and thought it was exceptional. Was with a group. We then opened up this varietal on two occasions and it disappointed twice. Not that it was bad, but it was just not as exceptional as I had remembered, and not in the calibur of other Zin's at this prince point. (Try Le Cuvier). Earthy nose, with a bitter finish, and strong tanins that his on the back of the throught and jaw. Not horrible but not as enjoyable as other Zins.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
