Professional Reviews For This Wine

In many ways, Turley's 2010 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is the most exotic and beguiling of these wines. Melted road tar, black olives, juniper berries and menthol all jump from the glass. A huge, full-bodied wine, the Rattlesnake Ridge boasts serious complexity and nuance. The tannins are also pretty fierce at this stage, so patience is a must. Still, there is no denying the 2010 is special. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.

(14.8% alcohol): Saturated ruby. Musky aromas of dark berries and meat. Fat, broad and sweet, with dark berry, black cherry and bitter chocolate flavors accented by pepper and herbs. Finishes very long but the huge, slightly drying tannins will require some patience. I much prefer the style of the Hayne petite sirah.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Petite Sirah

Once thought to be a relative of Syrah, this red variety actually shares DNA with the Durif grape. Wines made from Petite Sirah (or Petite Syrah) are robust, tannic, and darkly-colored. It is bottled both as a single variety and used in blends to add body. Petite Sirah grows best in warmer climates such as Argentina and California's Sonoma, Paso Robles, Amador, Mendocino, and Napa regions. Typical descriptors for Petite Sirah include black pepper, jam, and blueberry.
