The 2010 Clos des Lambrays is striking. Dark cherries, plums, wild berries, spices and licorice are woven together beautifully in this highly expressive, singular wine. A cool vein of minerality is a common thread as the wine continues to take shape in the glass. There is a beguiling, mysterious quality to the finish I find highly attractive. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow over the next two decades plus.

A supple red, loaded with spice and berry flavors that lean toward cedar, sandalwood, currant and strawberry. Underscored by a fusion of earth and mineral accents, this is buoyed by the seamless structure. Fresh and delicate, but by no means easy, offering a long conclusion.

A highly expressive and very broad nose of superb aromatic complexity that includes earth, game, spice, red currant, plum, violets and a hint of the sauvage. The round and supple flavors possess outstanding detail and while the complexity doesn't quite match that of the exquisite nose, it's not far behind and this culminates in a beautifully balanced and harmonious finish that delivers striking persistence. I also had a chance to retaste the 2009 and it is bigger, richer and more powerful while the 2010 is much more of a wine of finesse and refinement. In a word, beautiful.

Good bright, deep red. Very closed but pure and stylish nose hints at cherry liqueur and spices, with elements of mulch and pepper emerging with air. Dense, tactile and large-boned, but with its flesh somewhat suppressed today. Finishes saline, concentrated and thick, with substantial granular tannins. This needs at least six to eight more years in bottle to expand, and may well deserve an even higher score by 2020.

About This Producer

This vineyard near Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits produced stellar wines in the 1940s and fully deserved Grand Cru status, yet this was not achieved until 1981. Under owners Roland de Chambure, the Saier family and oenologist Thierry Brouin, the "sleeping beauty" vineyard succeeded in making a comeback after having fallen into disrepair in the 1970s. In 1996 after being sold again, the new owners, Gunter and Ruth Freund, restored the chateau and re-established the successful path that Lambrays has since followed.

The wines are studies in finessed concentration and exhibit an enchanting blend of fruit, spice and mineral that continues to evolve on the palate and in the cellar. In addition to the Morey St Denis reds, Lambrays also produces a few Chardonnays from Puligny Montrachet.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
