Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Bright ruby-red. Heady aromas of strawberry, cherry-cola, potpourri and spicy oak. Silky, sweet and seamless, with superb depth and energy to its red berry and floral pastille flavors. Extremely suave pinot that shows excellent energy and clarity on the persistent, floral finish.

Complex cherry, plum and raspberry flavors are ripe, moderately rich and layered, turning delicate and elegant, where the plummy flavors reverberate. Best from 2013 through 2023. 780 cases made.

The 2010 Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard is a classic Russian River Pinot. Plums, black cherries, mint, licorice and sweet spices all flesh out in the glass. I very much like the length and overall sense of polish. In 2010 the Koplen is striking in its beautiful balance and radiant, supple personality. The Koplen is among the wines that were partially fermented in oak vats, 20% in this case. In 2010, the Koplen also includes 20-25% whole clusters. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.

About This Producer

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
