Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

(a blend of 44% grenache, 31% mourvedre and 25% syrah; grown on old, rocky volcanic soil at an altitude of 1,700 feet): Good dark, bright red. Complex, expressive nose offers blueberry, blackberry, licorice, cardamom and black pepper. Precise and vibrant, with dark fruit flavors perked up by pepper and an ineffable spice component. Very silky wine with terrific aromatic complexity. The slowly mounting finish features firm but fine-grained tannins that dust the teeth. A superb showing today.

About This Producer

Premiering her own brand with the 2006 vintage, Helen Keplinger has already been active in wine on two continents. She has worked with Heidi Barrett and Kathy Joseph in California, and made the first three vintages of Melis in Priorat. Production of the first release of Keplinger, (Syrah, and a Grenache-based/Syrah blend) is all sourced from Knights Valley and is under 300 cases. A Mourvedre is also produced.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
