(made with a third whole clusters and 43% new oak): Glass-staining purple. Cherry compote, cassis and blueberry on the nose, with hints of olive, violet and vanilla gaining strength with air. Big, mouthfilling and chewy, with surprising finesse and lift to its fleshy black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. Velvety and expansive syrah, with supple tannins giving support and shape to the impressively long, smoky-sweet finish. (JR)

About This Producer


The 25-acre biodynamically farmed DuMOL Estate Vineyard is located on an undulating east-facing slope of one of Russian River Valley's most famous ridgelines. From this classic site, and in tandem with some of the coastal area's finest growers, DuMOL crafts wines that fully capture the aromatics, flavors, and textures that exemplify their vineyard sites and the varietal characteristics in the purest and most precise form.

Wine Varietal: Syrah


While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
