Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89-92

(two-thirds Mazoyeres): Complex nose melds dark raspberry, licorice, coffee, mocha and underbrush. At once sweet and energetic, with strong acidity nicely buffered by the wine's silky texture. Terroir-driven wine with good stuffing and substantial ripe tannins. (The rather masculine, powerful Cazetiers was quite reduced, not to mention hardened by CO2, and was impossible to assess.)

About This Producer

Founded just over one hundred years ago, Domaine Armand Rousseau is a family run winery considered amongst the best in Burgundy. Rousseau owns some of the most prestigious plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, and the resulting wines present the perfect distillation of the time-honored traditional methods of winemaking in Burgundy. The formula is simple - superb vineyards plus old vines plus low yields. This translates into wines of superb concentration that achieve a Burgundian balance of essential elegance and striking purity.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
