Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 94

The 2009 Bone Rock is a round, enticing red laced with sweet, succulent dark cherries, plums, flowers and spices. It shows remarkable intensity and fabulous balance. Bone Rock is made from the first blocks planted in the James Berry vineyard and is predominantly Syrah, while the James Berry Vineyard (the wine) is Grenache focused. In 2009 the blend was 57% Syrah, 31% Mourvedre and 12% Grenache. The Syrah component was vinified with 100% stems and saw a maceration lasting 50 days. The wine was aged in 60% new oak. Smith bottled the 2009 in May 2011, earlier than the norm (around 30 months), as he wanted to preserve the freshness he had in the tannins.

About This Producer

Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre-based blends from the Templeton Gap of Paso Robles, California. They let their rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through their wines by keeping yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. Production is kept at a total of 2200-2800 cases per year divided between 6 different cuvees: Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block and Bone Rock.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
