The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a gorgeous, rich wine layered with mint, tobacco, spices, cedar and licorice. It shows gorgeous textural depth and tons of aromatic nuances. This is a fabulous wine loaded with class and personality. It isn't the biggest wine here, but it is exceptionally polished. Wow!

Beautifully crafted, deliciously rich and polished, harmonious and layered, offering rich red and dark berry, with light cedar, mineral and spice. Ends with firm, fine-grained tannins.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Day 1: Napa fruit purity and freshness prevail here! A dark red core with vibrant red edges. Aromas of cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, and graphite . The palate is young but generous with fine medium toned tannins and plenty of acidity for freshness. Great length as the finish carries the fruit and dusty mocha to the end. Day 3: Rock solid day 3, the remaining half bottle was re-bottled and sealed in a half bottle. Same wine but with more complexity and breadth.

pretty ripe but good acidity and streak of minerality

Disappointing. Seems to be at an awkward stage and is not developing the body and texture one would expect. Hopefully it will go up from here, but may be losing steam

About This Producer

"Perhaps the finest California pinot I have ever had the pleasure of tasting," says Allen Meadows in 2006. And that was enough for Rivers Marie to catch fire throughout an ever-increasing cult of Pinotphiles.

However, the story of Rivers-Marie begins with Thomas Brown, a native of South Carolina who caught the wine bug travelling through Europe as a twenty-something. He found his way to Napa Valley and learned under the tutelage of Ehren Jordan at Turley Wine Cellars. Years later, after becoming a consulting winemaker for more than a dozen wineries, Brown was connected with Scott Zeller, owner of Summa vineyard, and subsequently asked if he wanted some fruit.

From there, Thomas Rivers Brown and his wife, Genevieve Marie Welsh took advantage of their golden opportunity to make awesome Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. In the debut vintage of 2002, Summa vineyard was Brown's only source of Pinot Noir, but he soon expanded to other vineyards near Occidental, including Occidental Ridge. Now, in addition to producing some of the most sought-after and critically acclaimed Pinot Noir, the pair also produces Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and Howell Mountain Cabernet.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
