Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91(+?)

Bright ruby-red. Shy, fresh nose hints at black fruits, meat, pepper, spicecake and menthol. Silky, tangy and pure, with sound acidity giving shape and grip to the flavors of black raspberry, spicecake and milk chocolate. Relies as much on its edgy acids as on its very suave tannins for structure. A very good showing: I never would have guessed this wine was carrying 14.8% alcohol.

Right after opening there was little nose and seemed a bit dull. After opening up it was excellent. More typical of a colder upper west coast syrah rather than the hotter cali style. Dark and dense but with a fresh flavor and some decent tannins suggesting it would be a bit better in a few years. Still great now as long as you let it breath for a half hour or so.

About This Producer

Owen Roe, named after a 17th century Irish patriot who dedicated his life to political equality and freedom, is owned and run by Jerry Owen and David O'Reilly (winemaker). Their aim is to source only the very best fruit from top sites in Oregon and Washington, handle it gently in the winery, and produce wines of superior balance and quality. O'Reilly is meticulous in his attention to detail from the vineyard to the bottle, and his hard work and dedication show through in the final products.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
