Rich and dense, chewy too, this red offers a dense core of dried currant, dark berry, fresh-turned earth, black licorice and roasted herb notes. Ends with grainy tannins.

Good saturated ruby-red. Very fresh aromas of black raspberry, licorice and toffee. Lovely energy to the classic dark berry, licorice and graphite flavors. Impressively concentrated for this bottling and showing considerable early sex appeal, especially considering that it was bottled barely a month prior to my visit. Finishes with noteworthy lift and length.

The 2009 Matriarch opens with a burst of dark red fruit, flowers, licorice and tobacco. It boasts remarkable inner perfume, soft, silky tannins and fabulous overall balance. I especially like the way the 2009 fleshes out on the finish. The depth and roundness of the fruit makes the 2009 very appealing, even at this young stage

Really like this wine. Not the plush nose and mouth feel of some Napa cabs, but great flavor and balance. A little bit tannic still, but a really nice wine.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
