Ripe and deeply flavored, concentrated and well-structured, this full-bodied red offers a complex mix of black cherry, wild berry and raspberry fruit that's pure and persistent, ending with a pebbly note and firm tannins.

is a three-vineyard blend, including Gap's Crown, a designated bottling. The nose shows a rich, saturated perfume of cherry and licorice with undertones of sandalwood. The slow-opening palate offers licorice, spicy cherry and hints of red currant. Sonoma Coast is round and seamless in texture with a lingering sweet spiciness on the finish.

Bright ruby. An aromatic nose combines raspberry, candied licorice, pepper, violet, herbs and spicy oak. Sweet, chewy, fine-grained and juicy, with good sappy energy intensifying the red berry and cherry flavors. The persistent, gently tannic finish offers very good palate coverage and an echo of licorice.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is dark, round and totally gorgeous. In 2009 the Sonoma Coast is bigger and richer than the Russian River bottling. It boasts tons of juiciness in its layered, highly expressive fruit. Dark cherries, violets, licorice, spices and mint are given an extra kick of freshness from these cold-climate sites. The Sonoma Coast bottling is made from two vineyards in the Petaluma Gap and a third site on the northern coast near Annapolis.

About This Producer

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
