The 2009 Pinot Noir De Villiers Vineyard, from vines planted in 1997, bursts from the glass with expressive, juicy fruit. Dark red berries, flowers, mint, spices and an orange rind follow, leading to a generous, inviting finish. The De Villiers is the only vineyard-designate Pinot made from fully de-stemmed fruit. It is a towering wine of incomparable class and elegance. Simply put, this is a stunning showing from Calera. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Vivid ruby-red. Intense, spice-accented aromas of candied red fruits, cherry-cola and fresh rose, with subtle earth and anise notes emerging with air. Juicy, penetrating sweet raspberry and floral pastille flavors show a seamless texture. Closes sweet and long, with resonating berry and floral elements and fully absorbed tannins.

Nicely balanced and pure; shows plenty of its terroir. Structured and showing a pleasant bit of brett on the finish. Masterfully made.

About This Producer

The hunt for limestone took California Pinot Noir trailblazer Josh Jensen to one of the highest and coldest vineyard sites in the state, to a place where limestone lived; several million tons, in fact. Time spent in Burgundy, including a harvest at DRC, had instilled in Jensen an appreciation for the influence of terroir in great wine. In 1974 Jensen bought a parcel at 2,200 feet above sea level near Mt. Harlan in San Benito County and planted his first 24 acres to Pinot. While waiting for these vines to mature, he produced his first vintage, 1,000 cases of Zinfandel, in 1975. Over the years, Jensen's property has expanded to include Viognier, Chardonnay, and additional Pinot vineyards. In the large Mt. Harlan AVA, established by his own efforts in 1990, his vines are the only ones planted. Fruit for Calera's wines comes from both the estate property and several Central Coast vineyards, which provide fruit for the Central Coast and El Nio bottlings. Organic practices in the vineyards, and a seven-tier gravity flow winery ensures Calera wines undergo minimal "manipulation." For his Pinot, native yeast and whole cluster fermentation in small lots, as well as 16 months in barrel make for structured, "Burgundy-inspired" wines. Truly a pioneer, Jensen has been recognized many times over for his contribution to California winemaking, recently being honored as 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
