International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

(includes 17% petit verdot): Dark purple. Aromas of cherry compote, cassis and pipe tobacco, with bright mineral and spice notes gaining strength with air. Sappy, alluringly sweet dark fruit flavors show a seamless texture and excellent clarity. Suave, harmonious tannins add shape and gentle grip to the very long, focused, refreshingly bitter finish.

Ramey's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum has shut down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, not at all uncommon for wines of this vintage. Still big, huge and rich, the 2009 flows across the palate with massive fruit, but the flavors aren't totally open today. At the same time, it is impossible to miss the wine's underlying energy. The combination of sheer opulence and big, broad-shouldered structure is compelling. Readers who can be patient will be rewarded with a sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink beautifully to age twenty, if not beyond. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029.

Offers a baseline rich earthiness to the dried currant, beefy herb and cedar flavors, ending with chewy tannins and notes of anise and cedar. Ends with drying tannins.

Very good, with blackberries, currants and a touch of coffee. But does not compare with 2007.

About This Producer

Ramey Wine Cellars was founded in 1996 by husband and wife team David and Carla Ramey. David had previously made wine at such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd. Located in Healdsburg, Ramey Wine Cellars prides itself on producing hand-crafted wines using a combination of Old World tradition and New World innovation. Ramey crafts Cabernet blends and Chardonnays sourced from fruit in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The Cabernets include those from Diamond Mountain District and Jericho Canyon Vineyard, as well as a Napa Valley Claret. The Chardonnays are both vineyard-designate and appellation, made in identical fashion so as to reflect their sense of place. The Chardonnays are whole-cluster pressed, fermented in Burgundian barrels with native yeast and bottled without filtration. In addition to their dedication to Cabernet and Chardonnay, Ramey has recently produced a Carneros Syrah and looks forward to purchasing vineyards of their own.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
