is a masterpiece - the nose is an exotic wonderland of six clones; Pommard 4 and 5, Wadensvil 23, and Dijon 114, 115 and 777 that delivers root, herb, brown spices, juicy red fruit and licorice aromas. The palate is gushing with polished blueberry, lavender, lilac and citrus zest on entry through a mid palate of black raspberry, currant and spicy, round black cherry. Plain and simple, this is an extraordinary example of Pinot Noir.

Aromas of cola, black licorice, loganberry, mineral and spice are tight, structured, focused and concentrated, fanning out nicely on the finish. Gains depth and detail, ending with a red candy aftertaste.

Bright ruby. Complex, seductive bouquet of raspberry preserves, gingerbread, potpourri, cola and a hint of star anise. Silky and expansive, with serious heft to its red fruit flavors but surprising elegance too. Fresh, precise and sappy on the finish, which echoes the red berry and spice notes.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard is an unusually restrained wine, a Russian River Pinot. Bright red fruit, cranberries, sweet flowers and spices are some of the many notes that flow across the palate. This is one of the more silky wines in the lineup. All of the elements flow together gracefully in this beautifully balanced Pinot. Bright, lively acidity reappears to frame the elegant finish. The Keefer was made with 100% destemmed fruit.

About This Producer

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
