purely domestic wine report | Rating: 93

has a vibrant aromatic note kissed with violet, lavender and mulled sweet cherry with whiffs of bittersweet chocolate. The palate keeps the vibrancy of the red fruit on entry quickly fleshing out into a supple black fruit m©lange mid-palate with graphite, kirsch and orange skins providing an intriguing counterpoint to the finish.

Bright ruby-red. Highly expressive aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, cocoa powder and fresh rose. Silky and incisive on the palate, displaying superb energy and precision to its rich red fruit and floral pastille flavors. Conveys an impression of tension and energy and finishes with excellent length and lift.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard captures the energy and focus of this site in the Sonoma Coast appellation. There is an energy and drive to the Gap's Crown that is unique among the Kosta Browne Pinots. Cool, mineral infused notes and wild flowers add lift on the finish. The Gap's Crown was made with 10% whole clusters.

Trim and focused, with a spicy herbal edge to the dried berry, mineral, tar and cedar notes. Full-bodied, ending with a neatly tapered finish that ends on a fresh earthy, pebbly aftertaste.

About This Producer

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
