The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee is pure, seamless and totally beautiful. Hints of chocolate, cloves and gingerbread appear on the nose, followed by rich, deep layers of fruit. There is a baritone-like expression in the 2009 that is striking. Sweet floral notes appear later, adding lift, vibrancy and freshness. In other words, all the elements are perfectly in balance. This is a gorgeous 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

100CS, has a nose of richly expansive loam, cherry and currant. The palate is gorgeous with balanced currant, red cherry and blackberry, although this wine is more about the texture and length than the flavors. The tannins are silky and well integrated into the wine.

Smooth and richly flavored, offering supple currant, black berry and beef carpaccio. Firms up on the finish, with the flavors gaining traction and detail.

(100% cabernet sauvignon): Good bright ruby-red. Wild aromas and flavors of cassis, violet, leather and black olive, plus a whiff of adhesive tape. Concentrated and liqueur-like, with black fruit and floral flavors complicated by exotic spices and licorice. Today the wine's somewhat dusty tannins cut off the fruit. Normally I would say that this wine needs only time in the bottle to harmonize but I was concerned by the rather sauvage character I found in three different bottles.

About This Producer

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.
