Young but great cellar potential. Masculine, old world style pinot. If 2006 is the one to drink now, 2009 is the one to keep!

About This Producer

Hamilton Russell is located in the cool, maritime climate of the Walker Bay appellation in a valley adjacent to the old fishing village of Hermanus. The elegant, individualistic Chardonnays and Pinots owe their stunning style to the stony, shale-laden, clay-enriched soils of the estate, as well as the brilliant direction of winemaker Hannes Storm and winery owner Anthony Hamilton Russell. Hamilton Russell also makes an "Ashbourne" Pinotage (cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault).

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
