The aromas in this are amazing, with blueberries, blackberries and fresh mushrooms. Black olives. So aromatic. Full-bodied, with super velvety tannins and lovely depth of ripe fruit. Balanced. Wild flavors on the finish of, meat, berries and forest fruits. Hints of decadence. 33% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon. Best Figeac ever. Try after 2020.

This is very tight, showing a prominent roasted apple wood and bittersweet cocoa frame more today, though the core of dense currant paste, blackberry pate de fruit and plum sauce waits in reserve. Gorgeous singed spice, anise and toasted fig bread notes flitter through the finish, though this needs some time in the cellar to resolve itself fully. A very distinctive, structured expression of St.-Emilion. Best from 2016 through 2035.

(a very moderate 13.5% alcohol for the vintage): Red-ruby. Aromas of redcurrant and plum are complicated by gravel, tobacco, wild herbs and cedar. Lush, suave and seamless, with noteworthy energy and a restrained sweetness to the fine-grained flavors of red fruits, tobacco and herbs. Insinuating tobacco and cedar notes perfume the mouth as the wine opens in the glass. Very firm wine, finishing with noble, edge-free tannins, lingering spiciness and sneaky length. Quite ripe for Figeac but without any excesses.

Fabulous fruit - a little exotic, pure and dark. Cassis and cedary freshness too. So inviting. The tenderest of tannins, just the right amount of flesh and fine, elegant tannins. This was my coup de coeur of the tasting. (JH)

This is another amazing 2009 Bordeaux. I'm a left bank fan but this St. Emilion exhibits dark black currants and coffee. Everything is well balanced. The long finish will surprise.

About This Producer


Chateau Figeac lies in the north-west part of the Saint-Emilion appellation in an area referred to as "Graves de Saint-Emilion", a location shared with Chateau Cheval Blanc. This sub-division consists of 60 hectares of gravel, which devides it from the limestone slopes near the center of town and the sands along the plain. Unlike most other wines from St. Emilion, Chateau Figeac is not Merlot-based (a grape that thrives on limestone soils). Rather, its Medoc-style blend is dominated by Cabernet, a grape that prefers gravelly soil. The typical composition is 70% Cabernet (half Cabernet Franc, half Cabernet Sauvignon) and only 30% Merlot. This estate consists of 40 hectares producing approximately 10,000 cases. The property is owned by Thierry Manoncourt and family and is classified as a 1er Grand Cru Classe (B). La Grange Neuve de Figeac is the estate's second wine.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend


Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
