Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

A brilliant expression of dense, rich layers of spice, beef, wild berry, savory and herbal notes, offering intensity, focus, grace and finesse. Should evolve beautifully over the next decade or two.

I could have sworn the 2009 IX Estate Syrah had some Viognier in it, but all of these wines are 100% Syrah. Flowery, peppery, blackberry and bacon aromas reminiscent of a Cote Rotie jump from the glass. However, once in the mouth, the masculinity, power, awesome richness and incredible texture come forward. This killer Syrah should drink well for 20 or more years.

Saturated medium ruby. Musky nose combines dark berries, crushed rock, game, violet, espresso and tangerine rind. Fresh but youthfully tight and primary, and currently dominated by its structure. The intriguing citrus quality follows through in the mouth, where it perks up the dark fruit, licorice and tar flavors. Finishes classically dry and firmly tannic, with a lightly saline character. I'd forget about this one for four or five years.

About This Producer

Ann Colgin, a former fine art dealer, began her label in 1992, and it quickly became one of the most sought-after names in Napa. Winemaking duties were originally handled by Helen Turley, then Mark Aubert in 1999. Production of the Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard is very small, with only about 350 cases produced each vintage. As with most of the world's truly great wines, Colgin's philosophy revolves around low yields and meticulous care of the fruit in the vineyard, winery and transportation between the two.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
