Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 93

Juicy and nicely framed with a singed bay leaf note, which allows the medium-weight core of crushed plum and mulled fig to glide along nicely through the velvety finish. This fleshes out considerably as it sits in the glass, showing more layers of dark fruit and lingering minerality. This has some power in reserve, but lovely balance as well.

Bright red-ruby. Brooding aromas and flavors of cassis, licorice, minerals and earthy dark tobacco. Juicy, spicy and tightly wound; dense and powerful but with the elegance of the year. Seriously concentrated wine with enticing sweetness currently overshadowed by a serious spine of dusty tannins. This deep, long Pauillac calls for at least six to eight years of cellaring.

Mid crimson. Scented. Serious, dry finish and very zesty. Vibrant.

Dark coffee and fig. Not a lot of fruit flavor. Full bodied and tannins have melded well.

About This Producer

A fifth-growth chateau that consistently outperforms its rank, Clerc-Milon is part of the famous Rothschild family of estates. Purchased by Baron Philippe for a song in 1970 after it had fallen into extreme disrepair, the property saw a period of investment and re-habilitation and began again putting out quality wines in the early 1980s. Located in the northernmost region of the Pauillac appellation between Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild, Clerc-Milon is comprised of 43 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Camernere. Over recent years, Cabernet plantings have decreased, being replaced with more Merlot. The 14,000 case production is dominated by Cabernet, giving it firm structure and age-ability.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
