A supple, graceful, yet potent and engaging young Cabernet, the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. Shows intense, minty bay leaf and dried currant and berry flavors that unfold gracefully, picking up a nice minerally edge as well as tannins that are firm yet graceful and refined.

(93% from To-Kalon fruit): Good bright medium ruby. Aromatic, essence-of-Oakville nose offers black raspberry, cassis, loam, spices, licorice and menthol. Lush but fresh and delineated, with a medicinal minty quality to the cassis and graphite flavors. A bit tough for a 2008, but there's also good underlying sweetness and length here. The wine's serious tannic structure calls for a few years of patience. Will this fatten up in bottle?

The dense ruby/purple 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville has attractive black currant fruit as well as hints of chocolate and toast. This blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc is complex, elegant, and reassuring. Medium to full-bodied and pure, it is ideal for drinking over the next decade.

Has a pretty nose with a lift of blue plum and red fruit coupled with some spicy roundness. The palate is smooth and polished on entry with nice core of fruit and velvety texture. Finishes a little short.

About This Producer

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
